Brush trucks, quick attacks and mini pumpers are the small, nimble end of the fleet: wildland and grass fires, vehicle fires, and the first-due call where a full-size engine is more truck than the job needs. They are also the cheapest way into a new or growing department, and with new-build lead times where they are, a used unit is often the only one available this year.

Most are built on a Ford, RAM, GMC or Chevrolet chassis, so the specification list is longer than it first looks: two-door, extended or four-door cab, gas or diesel, 4x2 or 4x4. Then the fire side — pump capacity and whether the truck can pump and roll, tank size, any foam system, roller shutter or conventional compartment doors, a booster reel, a front bumper winch, a brush guard, a generator. Ground clearance and approach angles matter if the truck will genuinely leave the road.
